Description:
J Levine Auction is proud to present The Wasserberger Art Collection of the Estate of Mark Iobst, Session I - NO RESERVE Open to the Public.

Nathan Wasserberger was born in Chrzanow, Poland in 1928. At the age of 13, he was taken to the infamous Nazi concentration camp, Buchenwald, where he would spend the next 3 years of his life. Every day was a struggle to survive, but he was often given extra food for his ability to paint around windows without getting any on the glass. After the war, Nathan began a formal education in painting at the Academy Julien in Paris, and eventually moved to America, where he became a noted student of Byron Brown and Ivan Olinsky at the Arts Students League in New York.

Nathan’s earliest works often depicted the inconceivable atrocities he personally witnessed during the Holocaust, but after much consideration, he resolved to dedicate his talents to celebrating life. Delicate portraits of brightness and beauty replaced the darkness, but his work would always be haunted by subtle edge of grief.

At the height of his popularity in the 1960s, Nathan’s paintings sold from the former Park South Gallery in Manhattan. He was celebrated for his clarity of figure and signature bright tones within portraits of rabbis, harlequins, geishas and nudes. In 1967 a book was published of his works and 67 copies of his paintings have been permanently archived in the Smithsonian Institute.

Today, a large majority of his work is enjoyed by private collectors. Nathan Wasserberger continued painting until he passed away in 2012.
